Political Obligation in the Logical Horizon of Republican Power

Abstract: The power logic influences the justification of political obligation. There are significant differences in the justifying effects under different power logic. According to the liberal power logic of noninterference, when a political community imposes some kind of political obligation to its citizens, the citizens are essentially interfered by the political community. This kind of interference eventually cause that the political obligation can't be effectively justified because of lack of legitimacy, unless the citizens agree with the political community's interference. In contrast, republicanism pursues a power logic of non-domination. This power logic emphasizes that when a political community imposes some kind of political obligation to its citizens, although it does interfere its citizens, but it does not arbitrarily interfere its citizens,or domination, and such interference basically fits in with its citizens' own interests. Comparatively speaking,if we explain the problem of political obligation according to the power logic of non-domination instead of the power logic of noninterference, the citizens will be more inclined to voluntarily undertake the obligations imposed by their political community.
