Abstract: Based on th e analysis of the language materials in view of communicative functions, this paper demonstrates some potential misuses in scientific English writing . For example, excessive noun conversion of verbs or adjectives may make the se ntences wordy and sloppy, and overuse of passive voice leads to unbalanced sente nce structure as well as stiff and ambiguous sounding sentences.
