Abstract: Xiang" is one of the most important categories in Chinese paintings. This paper starts with tracing the history of traditional Chinese painting and analyzing a large amount of former literature, and the clarifies the philosophical and cultural connotation of the formation of "Xiang". On the basis of the analysis, this paper aims to understand the essence of Chinese painting and provide a guidance to the future artistic creation.
